De Una Familia de Fotógrafos with Mayolo Lopez Gutierrez

Me llamo Mayolo López Gutiérrez, tengo 25 años y soy de Ciudad de México. 

I’m Mayolo López Gutiérrez, I’m 25, and I’m born and raised in Mexico City. 

Me emociona la mezcla de distintos formatos y cómo distintas tecnologías pueden convivir y comunicarse en diferentes salidas. Al trabajar en proyectos digitales, me fascina combinar video y fotografía fija. Me enamoré del gran formato y pronto regresaré a él, pero mientras, uso una Rolleiflex al mismo tiempo que las Nikon de 35 mm. 

I’m excited about mixing formats, about how different technologies can coexist and communicate in different end products. When working digitally, I love combining video and photography. I also fell in love with large format and will soon come back to it; meanwhile, I use a Rolleiflex and a Nikon F100. 

Vengo de una familia de fotógrafos. Mi abuelo fue fotoperiodista y mi papá es periodista y hace fotografía por gusto. Entonces, siempre hubo cámaras cerca de mí. Recuerdo que, cuando me invitaron a las primeras fiestas en la secundaria, a mí me daba miedo no saber qué hacer, porque no sabía bailar, entonces me llevé una cámara y era el que tomaba las fotos de la fiesta para mis amigos. Creo que, en un principio, la cámara era como un juguete con un instructivo complejo; algo que descifrar. Pero, reflexionando, ha sido siempre un dispositivo para conectar con mi padre y mi abuelo. 

I come from a family of photographers. My grandfather was a photojournalist and my father is a journalist and a hobbyist photographer. Therefore, there were always cameras around me.

I remember that I was super nervous to attend the first parties I was invited to, in my teens. I didn’t know how to dance, so I decided to grab my father’s old camera and make the party pictures, I think, in the beginning, the camera was a toy with a difficult to read manual; something to decipher. But, thinking about it, it has always been a tool to connect to my father and grandfather.

Actualmente estoy desarrollando un fotolibro y un cortometraje a partir de la colaboración con el pueblo de San Sebastián Xoco, en la Ciudad de México, en el contexto del despojo y la gentrificación por megaproyectos inmobiliarios. Mi interés principal es generar un producto que la comunidad reconozca como suyo y que sirva como vehículo para contar un pedazo de su historia; que lxs colaboradores tengan un rol activo en la producción, selección y presentación de sus imágenes. Crear un proyecto en el que la fotografía y el documentalismo operen de manera contraria a la convención y en favor de un grupo de personas que han sido vulneradas. 

I’m currently developing a photobook and a short film with the collaboration of the community of San Sebastian Xoco, in Mexico City, in the context of the gentrification they have suffered from real estate mega-projects. My goal is to create a product that the community recognizes as their own and that serves as a vehicle to tell a piece of their story; that the collaborators have an active role in production, selection and presentation of their images. To create a project in which photography operates contrary to how it usually does, and in favor of a group of people that have been wronged. 

Siempre mirando lo que hacen lxs fotógrafxs que admiro, e intentando mirar como ellxs. intento hacer la fotografía que a mí me gusta ver. Me interesa, más que nada, una fotografía en la que haya una relación de consentimiento, respeto y amor entre fotógrafx y fotografiadx. Las decisiones estéticas son importantes, pero me interesa más saber cómo se hizo una fotografía que cómo se ve en sí.  

I’m always looking at what the photographers I admire do, and I try to emulate them. I try to make photographs I enjoy seeing. I’m interested, more than anything, in photography where there is a relationship based on consent, respect and love between photographer and the photographed. Aesthetic decisions are important, but I’m much more interested in knowing how a photo was made than what it looks like.

Que acaban de encontrar un recortador de mundo. Un aparato tan versátil como la pluma o la brocha. Que lo usen para mirar, como una forma de conectar con otras personas y como una herramienta para ayudar.
